How Your Home’s Electrical System Works
Most homeowners only think about their electrical system when something goes wrong: a breaker trips, an outlet stops working, or the lights start to flicker. But understanding how electricity moves through your home can help you spot problems early, describe them clearly when you call for help, and make smarter decisions about repairs and upgrades.
This guide from Inca Electric takes you on a tour of a typical home electrical system, from the meter outside to the outlets and fixtures you use every day. Along the way, we’ll point out what to watch for at each stop and when it’s time to call a licensed Altamonte Springs electrician. Inca Electric is headquartered right here in Altamonte Springs, and our family-owned team has served our neighbors throughout Central Florida for more than a decade.
Altamonte Springs Homes & Their Electrical Systems
Altamonte Springs grew quickly during the 1970s and 1980s, and many of the city’s single-family neighborhoods date from that era. Today, those homes sit alongside newer townhomes, condos, and apartment communities near Uptown Altamonte and Cranes Roost Park.
That mix means electrical systems vary widely from one street to the next. Older homes may still have original panels and wiring that were designed for far fewer appliances and electronics than families use today. Newer homes and condos often have modern protection devices but may face limits on panel capacity or space for upgrades. Knowing the parts of your system helps you understand which issues apply to your home.
Stop 1: The Service Connection & Meter
Electricity reaches your home through either overhead lines or an underground connection from the utility. It passes through the electric meter, which measures how much power you use, before entering your home’s electrical panel.
Who’s responsible for what? In general, your utility owns and maintains the lines up to the point where they connect to your home, along with the meter itself. Homeowners are typically responsible for the equipment on their side of that connection, including the meter base, the weatherhead and mast on overhead services, and the wiring that runs into the panel. Responsibilities can vary, so check with your utility if you’re unsure.
What to watch for: Sagging or damaged service lines, a loose or rusted meter box, a damaged weatherhead, or a home where every circuit loses power at once. If lines are down, stay far away and contact your utility or 911. For damage to equipment on your side of the meter, call a licensed electrician.
Stop 2: The Electrical Panel
Your electrical panel is the distribution center for your home. Power enters through the main breaker, which can shut off electricity to the entire house, and is divided among individual circuit breakers that feed different rooms and appliances.
What a tripped breaker means. Breakers are safety devices. They switch off when a circuit draws more current than it’s designed to handle or when a short circuit or ground fault occurs. An occasional trip, such as when too many appliances run on one circuit, isn’t unusual. A breaker that trips repeatedly, especially with nothing extra plugged in, signals a problem worth investigating.
Panel capacity. Every panel has a rated capacity. Many older homes were built with smaller panels that can struggle to support today’s air conditioners, kitchen appliances, home offices, and electronics. If you’re planning a renovation, adding major appliances, or installing a generator, an electrician can evaluate whether your panel needs an upgrade.
What to watch for: A panel that feels warm or hot, buzzing or crackling sounds, scorch marks, rust, a burning smell, or breakers that won’t reset. A hot panel should be treated as an urgent issue.
Stop 3: Circuits & Wiring
From the panel, wiring runs through your walls, attic, and ceilings to every outlet, switch, and fixture. Each breaker controls one circuit.
Standard & dedicated circuits. Most outlets and lights run on 120-volt circuits. Larger appliances, such as air conditioners, electric ranges, dryers, and water heaters, typically need 240-volt circuits. Many appliances also require a dedicated circuit that serves only that appliance, preventing overloads.
Aluminum branch wiring. Some homes built in the mid-1960s through the early 1970s used single-strand aluminum wiring for outlets and lights. Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper, which can loosen connections over time and lead to overheating. If your home is from that era and you’re unsure what type of wiring it has, a licensed electrician can inspect it and recommend repairs.
What to watch for: Lights that dim when appliances turn on, warm or discolored outlet covers, frequent breaker trips, or a burning smell with no clear source. These can point to overloaded circuits, loose connections, or damaged wiring that may require repair or rewiring.
Stop 4: Outlets & Switches
Outlets and switches are where you interact with your electrical system most often, and they include important safety features.
GFCI outlets. Ground-fault circuit interrupter outlets protect against shock by cutting power when they detect current leaking to ground. They’re commonly required in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry areas, garages, and outdoors. Test them monthly using the “Test” and “Reset” buttons.
AFCI protection. Arc-fault circuit interrupters detect dangerous arcing in wiring that can lead to fires. In many newer homes, AFCI protection is built into breakers serving bedrooms and living areas.
Tamper-resistant outlets. These outlets have internal shutters that help keep children from inserting objects into the slots.
Two-prong outlets. Older two-prong outlets don’t have a ground connection. Using adapters to plug in three-prong devices bypasses an important safety feature. An electrician can recommend safe upgrade options.
What to watch for: Dead outlets, loose plugs that fall out easily, sparks, buzzing, discoloration, or outlets and switch plates that feel warm.
Stop 5: Lighting and Fixtures
The final stop is the lighting and devices throughout your home. Converting to LED lighting reduces energy use and heat, while recessed lighting and ceiling fans can transform a room’s comfort and appearance. Ceiling fans and heavy fixtures need electrical boxes rated to support them, and recessed lights must be rated for contact with insulation where applicable. Smoke detectors, many of which are hardwired and interconnected, are another critical part of your system’s safety.
What to watch for: Flickering or buzzing lights, bulbs that burn out unusually fast, wobbling ceiling fans, or fixtures that feel hot.
When to Call an Altamonte Springs Electrician Right Away
Some signs need professional attention: burning smells, sparks, smoke, a hot panel, partial loss of power, or a tingling sensation when you touch an appliance or fixture. If you notice any of these, turn off power to the affected circuit if it’s safe to do so and call a licensed electrician. Because electrical work carries serious risks of shock and fire, repairs beyond changing a light bulb or resetting a breaker are best left to a professional.

Request an EstimateI’ve used Inca Electric several times over the past 5 years or so. Richie and his crew always show up on time, they are always: courteous, respectful and professional. I’ve had them install: ceiling fans, indoor lights, outdoor lights, security cameras, and electrical outlets. They have always done excellent work for me and I have recommended them to others many times and would highly recommend them to anyone looking for an electrical service whether big or small, they can handle it and at a fair and competitive price. I don’t even get multiple quotes anymore, I trust them to do excellent work at a fair price!
A neighbor recommended Inca Electric to correct a poorly wired large garden shed. He has done several large and small jobs expertly, including a complete rewire of my workshop. We have referred Inca to other neighbors who have reported being extremely happy with their work as well. VERY reasonable prices on all of the jobs he has done for us.
I had Inca Electric add lighting in my living room, we will have them add under mounted cabinet lighting next. I would highly recommend this company.
Owner is very professional. I am an operating manager with 5 restaurant locations. He is the only electrician I trust. He exceeds our expectations every time.
